Rectory of the Church of the Virgin Mary
A former college of emeriti, that is retired priests. Bishop Schrattenbach had this Baroque building rebuilt from an older one in 1738, to a design by the architect Ignác Cyrani von Bolleshaus.
The vault of the Chapel of St John of Nepomuk bears a fresco by Johann Georg Etgens. On its southern side, the parish garden is bordered by the preserved town walls.
Among the many notable priests who served here was Dean Jan Fiala in the first half of the 19th century, a friend and supporter of Czech schools and of the theatre companies that came to town, especially the Štandera company. In 1941, Father Jan Bartek founded a choir here, the so-called “Bartek's little singers”, which gave many concerts across the country.
The parish once had its own school: in 1759 a house on the corner of Křižná Street was bought for it and a school for girls was set up there, while boys went to the Piarists. In the second half of the 19th century the school's spirit was Czech, above all under the teacher and writer František Slaměník, whose book Memories of an Old Teacher (1907) is largely devoted to Kroměříž.
The old school was demolished in 1939.
The house is part of the historic town centre of Kroměříž, a protected urban heritage reserve.
